Mosquito Inhibition

Mosquitoes represent one of the few natural drawbacks to living near a pond or lake. Well appreciated as a being annoying, some mosquito species (e.g., Culex pipiens) also transmit diseases such as West Nile virus. Mosquitoes breed in standing waters and swampy areas, depositing eggs in the water where they subsequently hatch. The resulting larvae live in the water, but are typically air breathers. Because they are not good swimmers, it is important that water surface tension is strong enough to allow the larvae to suspend from the water’s surface to access air for breathing. This location also facilitates their emergence from the water as adult mosquitoes.
